Teeth Staining Explained!

Tooth staining is something that affects everybody at some point of time. Other than aging, eating and drinking habits contribute equally to staining. Drinking tea, coffee, beer, wine, fizzy drinks, orange juices accelerate the process. Yellow stains of coffee and other beverages are just one of the example of teeth staining. There are many other causes of stain like medication, fluoride, aging, tobacco and many others to name.

The different types of tooth staining experienced by people are:

White spot: White spot on your teeth are the earliest signs of cavity formation. However, before reaching a conclusion, you must cross verify with your dentist via checkups and cleanings. This occurs as a result of tooth losing its calcium content.

Single dark tooth: This condition occurs as a result of trauma to the tooth. If a single dark tooth is formed owing to trauma, it means iron from your blood saturated the tooth dentin, thereby resulted in teeth staining.

Tobacco stain: Tobacco staining is one of the most common side effects of tobacco use. The staining results by both the nicotine and tar. Nicotine, when combined with oxygen, turns yellow and latches on to and within the tooth. This makes impossible to avoid tobacco induced stains on the tooth.

Dental fluorosis: Fluoride is well known for promoting tooth health. However, excess intake can lead to stubborn stains on the tooth.

What causes teeth staining
Compounds like chromogens give certain food and drink types a strong color that stains your teeth. Other than this, a substance called tannin can also make your teeth much susceptible to staining. Acids wear down your teeth, thereby increasing the risk of staining.

Measures to control tooth staining

  • Control the intake of stain-producing food or drinks if possible. For example: Substitute a normal tea with herbal green tea or flavored hot water.
  • Practice rinsing your mouth with water after eating or drinking stain-causing food or beverage.
  • Use a straw when drinking cola or juice that may stain your teeth.
  • Chew gum because they are xylitol-rich and can stimulate the increased production of saliva. This cleanses your mouth as well.
